Photographers in Malaysia

When do we need photographers in Malaysia? The answer is simple - when we need to have photographs taken when we are in Malaysia. So is anyone who can take a photograph in Malaysia a photographer?

The Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary defines a photographer as

"one who practices photography; especially : one who makes a business of taking photographs"

So according to the above definition, anyone who takes photograph regularly can be considered a photographer but would you want to hire just anyone who practices photography to be your photographer? I would assume no because you would want your photographs to turn out to be nice. So what sort of photographer would you hire? How will you choose your photographer? In this blog entry, I would talk about the current scenario of photographers in Malaysia.

Now that digital cameras including DSLRs are very affordable in Malaysia, even teenagers are photographers in Malaysia when their parents buy them DSLRs such as Canon EOS 50D as rewards for doing well in their exams. Even young graduates who just joined the workforce and earn just RM2600 a month will buy DSLRs with credit card easy installment payments and hop on the photographers bandwagon. Anyway we should not take age as a criteria when choosing a photographer in Malaysia. This is because they may be age but they may have a good eye for taking nice photographs and also they may learn good photography skills quickly as they are young.

So what are the most common occasions that we need photographers in Malaysia? Well, the usual occasions are weddings, birthdays, celebrations, banquets, graduations, and when we need to have nice family portraits taken for greeting cards. And that is when we will go and spend hard earned cash to hire professional photographers in Malaysia. One occasion where we seldom need to hire professional photographers ourselves in Malaysia is during funerals. Professional photographers are usually provided by funeral homes.

Sometimes young girls and couples like to take glamour photographs or nice scenic romantic photographs and they are willing to pay a photographer in Malaysia to have their photographs taken. Some photographers in Malaysia find normal photographs boring and proceed to take abstract and arty photographs by asking couples to do odd and unnatural poses like lying in a dirty alley or sitting in a suitcase. Let me ask you, if it is not for photographers like that, do you often sit in suitcases?

It is very easy to hire photographers in Malaysia. You can find any photographers in any of the 13 states and 3 Federal Territories - Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, Penang, Malacca, Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Pahang, Perlis, Selangor, Sabah, Sarawak, Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya as long as you are willing to pay the asking price.

There are part-time photographers, amateur photographers, fulltime professional photographers, your friendly next door photographers everywhere. You just need to ask around your friends - chances are many of your friends own a DSLR and dream of quitting their boring 9 to 5 job one day to be a fulltime professional photographers and you will be able to hire a photographer who is willing to undercut professional photographers just for a chance to stick a foot into the photographers' circle in Malaysia.

So how much would you expect to pay to hire photographers in Malaysia? There should be no difference in photographer's fees in Malaysia for Chinese wedding, Indian wedding, Malay wedding or Eurasian wedding. The per day charges ranges from RM200 (amateur photographer or your friendly next door photographer) to five figures fees to invite a professional photographer who have created a name for him or herself in the local Malaysia photographer arena. You even have to book the "famous" photographer way in advance in Malaysia, a year earlier or be in the waiting list.

Then you also have to decide what sort of photographers you want to hire in Malaysia? The photographers in Malaysia who ask you to pose and redo every single event in your wedding ceremony or the photographers in Malaysia who just follow you and your new spouse everywhere and capture spontaneous moments? This you will need to decide before you hire your photographer in Malaysia.

The other thing you need to consider is how many photographers do you want to hire for your event in Malaysia? If you hire too many photographers, you may find that instead of you being in the photographs, your photographers may be taking photographs of each other not on purpose but because some of your photographers may be blocking the shots of your other photographers.

You will also want to ask about the health history of your short-listed photographers. If your photographer fall sick at the very last minute, you will end up with no photographers for your event in Malaysia. This is bad, especially if you are the bride at your wedding. You wouldn't want to miss having your wedding immortalise on photographs.

There are so many photographers to choose from nowadays in Malaysia. Independent photographers or photographers attached to bridal studios in Malaysia. For photographers attached to bridal studios in Malaysia, you do not choose the individual photographers but you choose the bridal studios and then only select the photographers for your studio wedding photographs if the bridal studios provide you with a choice. Wedding photographs are the most common photographs where one will hire a professional photographer to capture.

In Malaysia, many times you will see make over booths in shopping centers where you are offered a make over session and then a photographer will take your "glamour" photographs. The price will include the make over and also a discounted make up product.

In Malaysia, many times you will also see booths offering to take photographs of your cute babies or toddlers by professional photographers. The price will include 5 photographs of your choice but after seeing all those cute photographs of your baby or toddler in cute costume taken by the professional photographer in Malaysia, you will find yourself hypnotised and dished out many red pieces of Malaysian currency just so that you may own all those cute photographs of your cute baby or cute toddler.

In Malaysia, more and more expecting mothers are having their lovely bulging bellies photographed by professional photographers. After giving birth, their week old babies will be the object of attention by professional photographers. Fortunately it is not yet a trend to hire professional photographers in Malaysia to take professional photographs of the birthing process. The photographers in Malaysia who take photographs of the birthing process are the husband-turned-photographers-in-the-delivery-rooms.

In Malaysia, we will need to wait many, many more years before young women will hire professional photographers to shoot glamour photographs of them in their birthday suit for them to admire when they are old and wrinkled like what young women in a far eastern country are now doing. It is dangerous to hire professional photographers in Malaysia to do this because the photographers may run into trouble with the law in Malaysia if they take photographs of young women in the buffs.

In Malaysia, if you want to take cute photographs of your toddlers by hiring professional photographers, you will need to hire a professional photographer who is good with children. A professional photographer in Malaysia who will make your children feel at ease and smile and laugh a lot.

In Malaysia, there are photographers who should be known as foodographers because they will whip out their big, big DSLR with telephoto lens to shot the food on the buffet table in hotels. This is not a behaviour that these photographers exhibit only in big posh hotels but they also do this in dirty makeshift foodstalls. Anywhere in Malaysia, as long as the food taste good, you will find these photographers or foodographers.

Ah, back to weddings in Malaysia. If you want people to know that you have made it in the world, climb up the social ladder in Malaysia or is going to marry a rich person in Malaysia, you will need to hire the most sought after professional photographer that you will need to book 2-3 years in advance. Well, this will mean that you will need to wait 2-3 years after the marriage proposal to get this famous professional who charges 6 figures for the photographer services. No, if you have really made it, there is no need for you to wait 2-3 years, you can just pay the photographer a 7-figure to drop all the other clients and slot you in.

Then we must not forget those very important professional photographers - photojournalists for newpapers. Without them, newspapers in Malaysia will be without photographs.

Lastly, in Malaysia, there are no photographers who offer the service of taking photographs of the dearly departed in many poses. Even if there are photographers who offer this service, no one in Malaysia in their right mind will pay for this service.

So this is all I have to say about photographers in Malaysia. Hope you have enjoyed reading it. Now just drop whatever that you are doing now and go and grab yourself a DSLR. You too can become a photographer in Malaysia - amateur, part-time, full-time, professional and what nots.
