Photographers in Malaysia
When do we need photographers in Malaysia? The answer is simple - when we need to have photographs taken when we are in Malaysia. So is anyone who can take a photograph in Malaysia a photographer?
The Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary defines a photographer as
"one who practices photography; especially : one who makes a business of taking photographs"
So according to the above definition, anyone who takes photograph regularly can be considered a photographer but would you want to hire just anyone who practices photography to be your photographer? I would assume no because you would want your photographs to turn out to be nice. So what sort of photographer would you hire? How will you choose your photographer? In this blog entry, I would talk about the current scenario of photographers in Malaysia.
Now that digital cameras including DSLRs are very affordable in Malaysia, even teenagers are photographers in Malaysia when their parents buy them DSLRs such as Canon EOS 50D as rewards for doing well in their exams. Even young graduates who just joined the workforce and earn just RM2600 a month will buy DSLRs with credit card easy installment payments and hop on the photographers bandwagon. Anyway we should not take age as a criteria when choosing a photographer in Malaysia. This is because they may be age but they may have a good eye for taking nice photographs and also they may learn good photography skills quickly as they are young.
So what are the most common occasions that we need photographers in Malaysia? Well, the usual occasions are weddings, birthdays, celebrations, banquets, graduations, and when we need to have nice family portraits taken for greeting cards. And that is when we will go and spend hard earned cash to hire professional photographers in Malaysia. One occasion where we seldom need to hire professional photographers ourselves in Malaysia is during funerals. Professional photographers are usually provided by funeral homes.
Sometimes young girls and couples like to take glamour photographs or nice scenic romantic photographs and they are willing to pay a photographer in Malaysia to have their photographs taken. There should be no difference in photographer's fees in Malaysia for Chinese wedding, Indian wedding, Malay wedding or Eurasian wedding. In Malaysia, if you want to take cute photographs of your toddlers by hiring professional photographers, you will need to hire a professional photographer who is good with children. A professional photographer in Malaysia who will make your children feel at ease and smile and laugh a lot.
In Malaysia, there are photographers who should be known as foodographers because they will whip out their big, big DSLR with telephoto lens to shot the food on the buffet table in hotels. This is not a behaviour that these photographers exhibit only in big posh hotels but they also do this in dirty makeshift foodstalls. Anywhere in Malaysia, as long as the food taste good, you will find these photographers or foodographers.

No, if you have really made it, there is no need for you to wait 2-3 years, you can just pay the photographer a 7-figure to drop all the other clients and slot you in.
Then we must not forget those very important professional photographers - photojournalists for newpapers. Without them, newspapers in Malaysia will be without photographs.
Lastly, in Malaysia, there are no photographers who offer the service of taking photographs of the dearly departed in many poses. Even if there are photographers who offer this service, no one in Malaysia in their right mind will pay for this service.
